Giant Sand

Formed by singer/songwriter Howard Gelb in his homeland of Tucson, Arizona, with Rainer Ptacek and Billy Sed in 1980. This line-up recorded as the Giant Sandworms, but after changes in personnel emerged shortly as Giant Sand. "Valley of Rain", the second album, featured Gelb, Scott Gerber, Tom Larkins (who played concurrently with Naked Prey), Chris Cavacas (from Green On Red) and Paula Brown (Gelb's Girlfriend from the Go-Go's). Personnel changes continued through the year although Rainer Ptacek, from the original band, emerged in Gelb's countrified alter ego group "The Band of...Blacky Ranchette".
